Chengde Attraction

Surrounded by mountains and with streams and brooks running through the city, Chengde has beautiful scenery and a pleasant climate in north China. Tourists can see the Summer Resort (Imperial Summer Villa), Eight Outer Temples, Jinshanling Great Wall and Qing Eastern Tombs. All these attractions make Chengde a very impressive place to visit.

The Mountain Resort

The Mountain Resort (Imperial Summer Villa in Chengde)

The Chengde Mountain Resort (Bi Shu Shan Zhuang) or literally Fleeing-the Heat Mountain Villa was the biggest garden of the imperial family in the Qing Dynasty. In 1994, the Mountain Resort and its surrounding temples were designated as a world Cultural Heritage by UNESCO.

Temple of Universal Tranquility (Puning Temple)

The Temple was built in 1755 by Qing emperor Qianlong in pursuance of Emperor Kangxi, his grandfather’s policy of “control through conciliation” and in commemoration of his victory in suppressing the rebellion of the upper strata of the Junggar people in Xinjiang.

Putuozongsheng Temple (Lesser Potala Palace)

The temple is also known as the Lesser Potala Palace. Built within more than 4 years from 1767 to 1771, the temple is located north of the Mountain Resort. Putuozongsheng is modeled on the Potala Palace in Tibet; hence, it is nicknamed as “Lesser Potala Palace”.

Xumifoshou Temple (Xumifoshoumiao)

Encompassing 37,900 square meters, the temple was constructed in 1780 after the model of the Tibetan Tashilungpo Monastery at Shigatse (Xigaze) and its name is a direct translation of the Tibetan name “Temple of Complete Happiness and Longevity”.

Anyuan Temple

Constructed in 1764, Anyuan Temple, an imitation of Ili Temple in Xinjiang is situated due east of the Mountain Resort. Previously in 1759, more than 6,000 people of the Dashidawa clan of the Junggar tribe in Xinjiang migrated to the former Rehe Province.

Temple of Universal Happiness (Pule Temple)

Covering 24,000 square meters, Temple of Universal Happiness was erected in 1766 when the upper strata personages from the Mongolian and the northwestern tribes came to pay respect to Qing Emperor Qianlong for the stability and peace in northwestern region of China.
