As cranes and bulldozers proliferate like ants across China, depositing cities and highways in their hammering trail, now is the time to venture inland in search of the more traditional side of China. In this pristine land of Guizhou, reside many of China's ethnic minorities. From the Dong to the Miao to the Shui, each minority, with its own distinct lifestyle, culture and mythology embodies a unique and refreshing vision of the world.
Guizhou, a rarely visited, landlocked province is an anthropological treasure trove. Its poor farmland and geography, discouraging the interest of powerful neighbors, are home to 13 of China's 55 officially recognized ethnic minorities. Southeastern part of the province with its capital called Kaili, provides a good base for explorations of the surrounding Miao, Shui and Dong villages.
Why not leave yourself a chance to witness the slash and burn agricultural civilization vanishing in this most populous country? Why not go with easytour to see and record the fading history and culture in the transition period? |
