Beijing Zoo mainly exhibits wild and rare animals growing in China, such as the Giant Panda and the Golden-fur Monkey. It covers an area of 40,000 kilometers and houses over 7,000 creatures of 600 different species, including the giant panda, red-crowned crane and Pere David"s deer-all unique to China-as well as the African giraffe, rhinoceros, chimpanzee and antelope; American continent; wild ox from Europe; and elephant and gibbon from India.
Among the 30 gardens in the Zoo, the Panda Garden is the one of the major attractions. The Chinese government takes the panda"s endangered plight very seriously and provides large grants with the hope that this symbol of China can be bought back from the point of near extinction. Pandas here are kept in a comfortable surroundings and well cared. Beijing zoo has a long and productive history with pandas, where giant pandas were first bred by human successfully. There are 8 pandas in Beijing Zoo at the moment, five in-door housing and 3 outdoors.
