Beijing Major Stadiums
37 venues are needed for the Games, of which 31 are in Beijing, the rest 6 are respectively located in Qingdao, Shanghai, Tianjin, Shenyang, Qinhuangdao and Hong Kong. Among them, the National Stadium, the National Aquatics Center and the National Indoor Stadium are the most impressive ones, all located in Olympic Green Park, Chaoyang District, Beijing.
The National Stadium, also known as the bird's nest, will be the venue for the Opening and Closing Ceremonies, as well as the main track and field and football stadium. The stadium will seat as many as 100,000 spectators during the Olympics. It is made of gray mining steel covered with a transparent membrane. The structural elements mutually support each other and converge into a grid-like formation, almost like a bird's nest with its interwoven twigs. A unique historical landmark for the Olympics of 2008, it meets all the functional and technical requirements of an Olympic National Stadium.
The National Aquatics Center will be the venue for swimming, diving, synchronized swimming and water-polo games during the period of the Beijing Olympic Games. The exterior of the National Aquatics Center, nicknamed the "Water Cube", is made from panels of a lightweight form of Teflon that transforms the building into an energy-efficient greenhouse. Solar energy will also be used to heat the swimming pools. It is the only landmark Olympic venue that is constructed by donations from compatriots from Hong Kong, Macao and Taiwan.
Covering an area of 80,890 square meters with seats for 20,000 audiences, the Stadium will be the Artistic Gymnastics, Trampolines and Handball venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games. The Stadium adopted the idea of a wavy roof mimicking an unfolded Chinese fan, as fan has been a symbol of China for thousands of years. This creative design, besides paying tribute to Chinese aesthetics, environment-friendly construction materials were used during the construction of the stadium, a total of 1,124 solar panels have been installed on the roof, which are expected to become a role model for the future.
