At local language, Karakuri means 'Black Sea'. With a depth of 30 meters, the water in the lake is dark blue, hence the name. 191 km west of Kashgar, it is located at the foot of Mt. Muztagata. The lake has an elevation of 3600 meters above sea level with the size of 10 square meters.

With towering glaciers and the 'Father of Ice Mountains' itself, Mt. Muztagata (7546m), Karakuri Lake has by far the most dramatic scenery of Xinjiang's alpine lakes. If the weather is clear, its beauty will take your breath away. Around the lake, it is an ideal place for hiking and trekking. The local Tajik people are so friendly and happy to invite you into their yurt for a cup of tea.
