City Guide of Silk Road

Wuwei

Han Tomb-WuweiLying approximately halfway between Lanzhou and Zhangye, Wuwei is a quiet, relaxing place and definitely worth a brief stopover. As well as some attractive temples, there's a pleasant new town and some quite substantial remains of the old settlement. The Emblem of China's tourism - the Han-dynasty Flying Horse of Wuwei, was discovered here in 1969 underneath the Leitai Han Tomb.

Highlights:

Leitai Han Tomb: the place where Flying Horse of Wuwei was discovered.
Confucius Temple (Wen Miao): the building was designed to commemorate Confucius, and now turns into a nice small museum.
Tianti Grottos: 65km away from the city, the grottos were carved out 1500yrs ago and spans a time of 1000yrs. Except for some Buddha statues, most of the mural and sculptures have been moved to Provincial Museum in Lanzhou for better protection.
