Surrounded by Gobi desert, Dunhuang is an oasis town situated at the west-most edge of Hexi Corridor, between Qilian Mountain and Mazong Mount. It has an elevation of 1138 meter above sea level.

Dunhuang has a typical continental climate. It is dry all year round with very little rainfall.(about 39.9 mm a year), and the temperature varies considerably in one day. The average annual temperature is 9.4 degree Celsius. The ideal time to visit Dunhuang is from May to October.
