Yuanyang County is located along the Red River of Yunnan province, well known for the spectacular rice-paddy terraces fields and original Hani culture there. Yuanyang is at some 6 hour’s drive from Kunming, while this can’t stop the tourists’ especial photographers.
The terraced rice fields have been cultivated at least 1300 years by local people, who still wear traditional clothes and daily attire in the region. The winter temperatures in Yuanyang, although never freezing, are such that they only support one rice crop a year. After the harvest, from mid-September till mid-November depending on the elevation, the terraces are filled with water until April, which is said to be the best time to view the paddy fields.
