Easy Tour China arranged a bespoke one day tour of Shantou, Guangdong province for my family. Our guide Darlene was knowledgeable and flexible. She was able to find my grandfather’s ancestral village and arranged for us to visit the school and ancestral house, which was very special, especially since my grandfather left China more than 60 years ago. Since we were interested in Chaoshan cuisine, Darlene recommended a speciality goose hotpot for lunch and we were able to try lots of delicious local snacks throughout the day. In the afternoon, we visited the Chen Ci Hong former residence and learnt more about the region’s history. Darlene finally gave us a tour of the old town with its unique architecture and landmarks. Shantou remains unknown to most Western tourists, but its history, culture and food are so interesting, I would really recommend it!
