King City Park (Wangcheng)

king city park museumCovering an area of 67 hectares, Wangcheng Park is the largest comprehensive park in Luoyang city as well as in Henan Province. It is located on the northern side of Zhongzhou Road in the heart of Luoyang city. Wangcheng Park, literally means 'the city of the king', gained its name as it was built in 1955 on the site of the capital city of the Zhou Dynasty (11BC - 22BC).

Wangcheng Park is regarded as one of the best places to enjoy the beauty of the peony in China, especially during the annual Luoyang Peony Festival. Luoyang considers itself as the hometown and age-old breeding ground of the pretty peony, a flower that is exalted in many of China's ancient literature and poetry, regarded by many Chinese as the symbol of the country. Over 200 species of planted peonies in marvelous colors blossoming in the park, and a total number of over 10,000 of the plants are contained within the compound.

Except the Peony Garden, the park is also renowned for its cultural spots, such as the Ding, a bronze vessel from the Zhou Dynasty, and Luoshu Tablet. Wangcheng Park is made up of five scenic areas: the History and Culture area, the Peony Admiring Area, the Peony Culture Area, the Wangcheng Zoo and the Amusement Area. In the highlight History and Culture Area tourists will enjoy a journey to the Zhou Dynasty and Chinese Civilization. Architecture of the ancient times, such as the Jishengzhu Tablets, a Shenyuantai Hall, Jicheng Hall, Zhou Memorial Pavilion and Mingdemen Gate, which reflects the glamour of the Zhou Dynasty, Han Dynasty (206BC - 220) and Tang Dynasty (618 - 907), can be found here
