How was Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge Designed and Constructed

Spanning the Zhangjiajie Grand Canyon, the southwestern and northeastern ends of the glass bridge connect the mountaintop cliffs between Lishuya and Wuwangpo respectively. This China’s  Glass Bridge in Zhangjiajie is constructed entirely of transparent glass, and it blends in with the surroundings. The glass is made of high-strength aerospace composite materials and features high hardness, high thickness, wear resistance, frost resistance, ultra-purity, explosion-proof, high load capacity, mold resistance, resistance to sudden temperature drops, and the combination of brittle glass and flexible Bridges.

The entire bridge is characterized by its wide span, low beam height, narrow deck, and light weight. It combines the features of a stage, bungee jumping, zip line, pedestrian walkway, and excursion, among others. It is the first suspension bridge in the world with a large space cable face opening capacity and a large-scale glass force structure.

In view of the special topographic and geological conditions of karst geomorphology region, the east anchor of Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge adopts gravity anchor. The west side anchorages adopt tunnel anchor with linear change of anchor plug cross-section. Its main cable consists of multiple strands, each strand is composed of multiple galvanised high strength steel wires.

In order to avoid the safety hazards caused by resonance, Zhangjiajie Glass Bridge adopts different forms of TMD and TLD to curb the vibration in horizontal and vertical directions. Glass spheres are installed on the top surface of the main girders, which can disturb the footsteps of pedestrians and at the same time act as mass blocks for the TMDs.

The glass bridge has 4 towers, with a maximum height of 40.65 meters (133 feet). There are 99 pieces of glass, each piece of glass is 4.42 meters (15 feet) long, 3.01 meters (9.9 feet) wide, 5 centimetres thick, weighs 1.5 tonnes, and is designed to carry 800 people.
